- 2/3 cup celery, sliced
- 2 green apples, cored and diced with skin
- 450g potatoes, skin on and diced
- ½ cup unsalted walnuts, roughly chopped
- 1 tablespoon sultanas soaked in boiling water and drained (optional)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- ½ cup extra light sour cream

Instructions

To prepare this recipe, you need to:
1. Boil diced potatoes in microwave until they become tender. Then, set aside to cool.
2. Put celery, apple, potatoes, walnuts, as well as drained sultanas in a bowl.
3. Mix sour cream with lemon and pour over potatoes.

This salad is perfect as all the ingredients you need to prepare it are in season even from October. Plus, it’s tasty and it doesn’t take long to prepare it. You can also add any other ingredients you like, so don’t stick to the following ingredients of this recipe. The main ingredients for this salad are:

  • 6 celery stalks, thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic crushed cloves
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • 1/2 small red onion thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup whole-egg mayonnaise
  • 1/2 cup roughly chopped walnuts
  • 2 small red apples, halved, cored and thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons wholegrain mustard
  • 50 g mild blue chopped cheese

Preparation

Step 1. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat and add onion. Cook and stir for about 2 minutes or until you see it has softened. Add garlic and celery. Cook and stir for 3 minutes or until these ingredients are heated through. Add 1/3 cup walnuts and cook for 1 minute.

It was made for the first time sometimes between 1893 and 1896. There is no proof of the real date when this salad was prepared as an experiment. The place of its creation is now the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel of New York City, United States of America. This was named back then Waldorf Hotel and got its present name after the merger with the adjacent hotel, named Astoria, in 1897.

The creator of the Waldorf salad is Oscar Tschirky. He was the maitre d’hotel at Waldorf’s and he created a bunch of new recipes for the menu of its restaurant. This is why he is also credited for creating the Waldorf salad. In 1896, a cook book written by him appeared. The Cook Book by Oscar of the Waldorf, as it was named contained the recipe for Waldorf salad. The original one did not contain walnuts, but when another cook book appeared in 1928, the salad was enriched with walnuts. This second book was named Rector Cook Book. The salad gained immense popularity right away and Cole Porter even mentioned it in one of his songs. In 1934, the Waldorf salad was so appreciated that it was featured in his song, You’re the Top.
